Making my Bed

Ever since I arrived in Wisconsin, I set the goal; I even wrote it down in my "to do list" -- devotional, read news, work out, write journal, make bed. Ideally, I would wake up in the morning, have breakfast, get ready for work, and, at some point in between, make my bed. However, for a long time after arriving here, I did not have a bed; if I did not have one, how was I supposed to make my bed? Then I realized a fallacy in that question: If I already had one, why would I want to make a bed, unless I wanted two?

If I'm not a terrible writer, you caught the pun. Actually, when I arrived in Wisconsin I had two goals: make my bed and make my bed every day. With the latter I have had mixed success; the former, which is the subject of this post, I have accomplished.

The idea emerged soon after graduating college; since work would not rely heavily on technical skills, why not us my Mechanical Engineering training at home? And so the seed was planted. However, with other things taking priority, I did not take action for a while. After a month, I began to draw a design; I wanted something reliable, simple to build, and safe to sleep on. After a couple of days, i came up with the requirements of a design: except for two, 24 boards of 2x4s, all cut to the same length; 72 flat head screws; and a power drill to assemble the whole thing. The following week I bought the wood, cut to the specified length; however, I could not start building because I was lacking a power drill. Luckily, a friend from work lent me one; it did not make sense to buy a tool which was 5 times the cost of the project. Thanks to a simple design, I was able to make it during labor day weekend, while both my roommates were gone -- one tool, one person, one day.

Now that I have made my bed, I can actually start to make my bed daily. So far, 100% completion.
